Bio | “Be of value.” It’s this simple but powerful advice, passed from father to daughter, that has guided Michelle Snoeren throughout her career — whether advising her clients at Engel & Völkers or leading the brokerage’s rising Advisors to greater heights of excellence as Director of Professional Development. “The majority of my business is referrals,” says Michelle, a Global Advisor at Engel & Völkers. “Being of value means finding out what people need so you become important to them. These referrals mean I did that part of my job.” Michelle grew up in Cranston and spent her childhood summers at overnight camp in Narragansett. It was a community “where everyone knew everyone,” says Michelle, who sees the interconnectivity of living in Rhode Island as both a networking advantage and creating a sense of obligation when serving her clients. “I’ve learned that in this business all you have is your reputation, especially in a small state,”she says. Michelle lives with her husband Pieter and their three (very spoiled) dogs in the Cowesett section of Warwick. Prior to joining Engel & Völkers in 2021, she worked for more than a decade as a successful Realtor; before that, Michelle was an Investment Advisor, which gave her great insight to the financial side of the real estate business. Her interest in buying and selling homes isn’t just professional, it’s personal. She and her husband spent 6 years living in and renovating a historic farmhouse in Jamestown before selling the property and moving to their current home, where she again is slowly working to embrace the original details of the home — perhaps to sell again… when she runs out of things to restore. “I like to bring homes to their full potential and pass them on,” says Michelle, whose extensive experience working with contractors — and sometimes acting as the project's general contractor herself — adds to her expertise when working with home buyers and sellers who are eyeing renovations. Her detailed eye for decor and staging combined with her renovation experience elevates the value she can bring to her clients. She relays "In my world, I like things to be beautiful, comfortable and engaging." Michelle is also passionate about supporting the professional development of the Advisors at Engel & Völkers — “lt is so fulfilling to see them succeed with the E & V tools I share with them” — yet that part of her job hardly impedes her work with clients. Michelle has the second highest sales tally at the agency, totaling more than $7 million in the first half of 2022 alone. “I know how to manage my time,” she understates. “That comes with experience.” Along with basics like how to perform market analysis and facilitate a strong offer, one of the lessons Michelle shares with Advisors is that buying or selling a house isn’t just a transaction, but it always happens during a major life event for clients. Learning the bigger picture behind a client’s decision to buy or sell a home — which may involve anything from relocation to retirement, marriage or divorce, or simply the need for more room for a growing or blended family — is part of an advisor’s job, and often the key to a successful relationship, Michelle says. “We are dealing with people’s lives and livelihood, and that requires empathy,” Michelle says. Relationships born of such caring can form the foundation for a successful career. Michelle recalls that, as a new Advisor, she met a couple looking to buy a house via a random online inquiry. After two (long) years of active searching, Michelle finally connected the couple with a home that matched all of their needs — on the same day it hit the market. “This couple, who came to me as an anonymous internet lead, has given me many referrals over the last 10 years,” she says. “Becoming someone of value to them had to transpire in order for them to call me back. We’ve also become friends, and they are now on their third house, married with three children, and just bought their first investment property.” Michelle’s approach to her job includes a firm commitment to preventing discrimination and supporting homebuyers from every background. “It has to start with agents, because we’re the ones dealing with buyers and sellers who may or may not have prejudices,” she says. “Everyone deserves fair housing.” Michelle is a member of The Alliance- which promotes this paltform nationally. She leads by example while passing her knowledge and experience on to the next generation of Engel & Völkers Advisors. “You have to be genuine and authentic and bring your best-self to every situation” Michelle says, whether that’s giving sellers gentle reassurance or taking the lead to bring a home sale to a successful conclusion. “I am a firm believer that every transaction has to be a win/win… for both sides,” she says.
