State Realtor® Political Action Committees have donated over

$ 0 m

over the past 6 years to legislators currently pushing for anti-LGBTQ+ bills.

The LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance is calling all Realtor® Political Action Committees (RPACs) to refrain from endorsing and funding elected officials and candidates who openly engage in discriminatory behavior against diverse groups including the LGBTQ+ community, especially the transgender and gender expansive (TGX) community. This webpage tracks which RPACs are currently supporting those who openly discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community.

And while this discriminatory behavior is being tracked from an LGBTQ+ lens, we want to acknowledge that the TGX community is at the forefront of these attacks. Consequently, we stand in solidarity with our TGX brothers, sisters and siblings, recognizing that until ALL of us are free from attack, none of us are free from attack. It is more important than ever to identify as an ally and stand for those who may not be able to, and stand with those who summon the courage each day just to live their own life.

The Alliance has proposed an “Article 10 Rule” that calls for RPACs to refrain from funding discriminatory officials even if they support legislation favorable to the real estate industry. We have also asked RPACs to take the easy first step of making modifications to the questions asked of all candidates up for endorsement which can be found here. The Alliance’s rationale is simple. If Realtors® must abide by the code of ethics, clearly those the industry supports should be held to equal standards. The idea has been accepted and formally adopted by Realtors® associations in Washington State, Washington D.C. Reno, and Palm Springs with several others considering it for adoption.

Article 10 of the National Association of Realtors® Code of Ethics reads in part:

Realtors® shall not deny equal professional services to any person for reasons of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Realtors® shall not be parties to any plan or agreement to discriminate against a person or persons on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

In 2023, the Alliance called on Texas Realtors® and its Texas Realtors Political Action Committee (TREPAC) to refrain from funding several state Senators and Representatives, Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Attorney General Ken Paxton who have authored or supported multiple discriminatory bills against the LGBTQ+ community, specifically those targeting trans and gender expansive people. It also asked Florida Realtors® and Florida Realtors PAC to pull its 2022 endorsement of Governor Ron DeSantis based on his repeated discriminatory actions towards diverse groups including the LGBTQ+ community.

About the Data

This page is updated daily with any new bills and sponsors.

The Alliance uses the ACLU’s Anti-LGBTQ Bills database to determine which bills are discriminatory. According to the ACLU, “Our legal and advocacy team uses a bill-tracking service and works with ACLU affiliates and local organizations across the country to monitor state legislatures for bills targeting the rights of LGBTQ people. Each bill is reviewed by legal staff at the ACLU’s LGBTQ & HIV Project before being categorized on this site.

Each bill is reviewed by ACLU legal staff and designated an anti-LGBTQ bill based on its text, potential impact, and restrictions or intrusions based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Most of these bills may not use words like “gay” or “transgender” in their text but nonetheless aim directly to restrict the rights, safety, or liberty of LGBTQ people.

This is likely because this information hasn’t been added to the Bill Track 50 database. Once this information is added, this page will update to reflect those additions.

RPAC donation records are publicly available through Follow The Money. We use Follow The Money’s API services to cross-check each bill’s sponsor with their corresponding state RPAC Association donations within the past six years to determine if they have received RPAC funding.

We plan on adding this data in the near future.

As per FollowTheMoney, public donations records for the 2024 election do not become available until candidates file their campaign finance report with their corresponding state disclosure agency. This page will be updated with 2024 donation records as they become available.

A bill’s status shows how far along it is on the path to becoming a law:

  1. Introduced: The bill has been written, filed, and assigned a number.
  2. Advancing (In Committee, Crossed Over): The bill may be debated and may ultimately be voted on in state legislative chambers.
  3. Passed Into Law: If both the state House and Senate vote to pass the same language, the bill goes to the governor and if the governor signs it, it becomes law. If a bill is vetoed by the governor, the legislature may still vote to override that veto, in which case the bill would become law.
  4. Defeated: The bill is vetoed by the governor, didn’t get enough votes, or is withdrawn.
