Join the Alliance for the first in a multi-part look at the LGBTQ+ community’s journey to homeownership over the last 50 years. We begin with a look at Greenwich Village, one of the original “gayborhoods” that rose to fame in the 1960s.
We will be joined by Michael Levine, a member of the Greenwich Village Historical Society, who was 25 years old when he moved from Brooklyn to Greenwich Village in 1967. He immediately immersed himself in the bohemian community that fully embraced gays and lesbians and was at Stonewall on June 28,1969. Not only did the events of that evening change the course of the LGBTQ+ movement forever, but it was also the day when Michael’s family and friends learned of his sexual orientation.
Along with sharing the events of the Stonewall uprising, Michael will explain how the gay and lesbian community lived in Greenwich Village along with how other NYC neighborhoods – and beyond – eventually welcomed members of the community.
