An Oral History – The LGBTQ+ Community’s Journey to Homeownership Part II: The Castro from the late 70s to Today

June 2, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT

Join the Alliance for the second in a multi-part look at the LGBTQ+ community’s journey to homeownership over the last 50 years. We will take a unique look at The Castro, arguably the most well-known LGBTQ+ community in the world.

The Alliance will be joined by Andrea Horne, a Black transgender woman who has been a part of The Castro community since the late 1970s. After transitioning at 15 and running away from home, Andrea befriended late Disco legend Sylvester and moved to San Francisco. She endured a difficult early adulthood before getting a college degree in social work at 30. For the past 20 years, she has been an activist on behalf of BI-POC trans women. She currently works at Curry Senior Center in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District.

Andrea saw a different side of The Castro, enduring discrimination from the largely gay, White male community. She will also discuss the devastation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and how it impacted the area through today. She will also share how The Castro has changed over the years, the impact of skyrocketing San Francisco home prices, and how the LGBTQ+ community has been welcomed in new communities in the Bay Area.
